Stand Up To Your Dreams

Does anybody remember the book that came out in the 1980’s, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten by Robert Fulghum? It is a fun read and something that is worth rereading after a decade or so. I have found that when I reread books like that I always pick up something that I missed before or something that has new meaning to me considering what is going on in my life right now.

So the point of my story today is that it is the simplest things in life that make the biggest difference. In this case I am talking about the Golden Rule or whatever you want to call it or however you want to phrase it. The version I grew up with is;

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

When I first started internet marketing, and sometimes even now, I just wanted a friendly voice on the other end of the phone line that did not want to sell me anything but was just there for genuine support. Someone to say “you are doing a great job with that” or even to say “that doesn’t seem to be working for you, why don’t you try this”, or even “how is your life in general going”?

When you are working with a new prospect or downline remember they don’t want to be sold, they are looking for an end result or a solution to a problem. As an upline it is in your best interest to be a friend first, and help them identify what they need to reach that result or solve that problem. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink. If you force a sale or a sign up you can’t make them use it or be motivated. They need to know that what you have is part of the solution they need to their problem and that you are there to show them the way. That is the way to a relationship that can last a lifetime and a business associate that will respect and follow you.

I am a strong believer of reading books on a constant basis, I probably get this from my mother who is never found without a book.  The difference is that I rarely if ever read fiction.  I have a total infatuation with reading self-help and motivational books.  This morning I opened my e-mail and found a blog post by Alex Mandossian, I don’t normally read his posts, but for some reason this one caught my eye.  It is all about the importance of not only reading books, but rereading them as you grow into a different, better person.

I was surprised to find that on his list of important books, I had only read one of them,  The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell.  The strange thing is that I am in the middle of reading Mr. Gladwell’s new book Outliers: The Story of Success.  This is a fascinating book on what it is exactly that makes somebody successful; is it money, is it environment, is it sheer luck, or is it a combination of many things at once.  For each person it’s different, but this book certainly gives an insight into what can make you successful.

The point I am trying to make is that nobody becomes successful by themselves.  You need help, and you need to grow as a person, as well as actually doing the work and being consistent.  So don’t ever think you’re too busy to read every day, and to grow as a person with each word.  My son has pointed out that people like him, with dyslexia, are just as intelligent, but have trouble reading and writing everyday .  I have come up with two suggestions for him to help him on his quest to become a better person; the first is to go to your local library and find books on tape and request the books you can’t find, the second is to buy this wonderful new program I got for Christmas called Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Standard.  And yes, if you’re wondering, I am dictating this blog instead of typing.  Everybody in this world has obstacles in the way to their goals, the difference is whether your obstacles stop you or make you stronger as you find a way around them.

So starting today make yourself better person, go find a comfortable chair and a good book and read.
